Why Orange County Water Is Hard, and Why It Is Not the Same Everywhere

Why Orange County Water Is Hard, and Why It Is Not the Same Everywhere

Orange County is not one water story. Two houses twenty minutes apart can be drinking water that started in completely different places, and that is the single most useful thing to understand before buying any treatment system.

North and central county pumps its own. Anaheim, Santa Ana, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Orange, Tustin and their neighbours sit above the Orange County Groundwater Basin, which supplies roughly 85 percent of the water used by the 2.5 million people living over it. That water is pumped locally and is typically chlorinated.

South county imports nearly all of it. Mission Viejo, Lake Forest, Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo and San Clemente sit outside the basin. Their water is brought in by the regional wholesaler from two sources: the Colorado River, and Northern California via the California Aqueduct. Imported water is treated with chloramine rather than free chlorine.

Most cities serve a mix of the two, and the ratio moves with the season and with supply conditions. That is why the taste of your tap water is not always the same in July as it was in February, and why your neighbour two cities over reports something different.

What does not change is the hardness. Published utility figures across the county run from roughly 9 to 18 grains per gallon. Anything above about 10.5 grains is classed as very hard, so most of Orange County sits at or past that line. Hardness is what furs the kettle, spots the shower door, stiffens laundry and quietly shortens the life of a water heater.

One useful nuance. It is tempting to assume imported water is the harder one. Huntington Beach publishes numbers showing the opposite for its supply: its local groundwater runs harder than the imported blend. Direction depends on the specific wells and the specific mix, which is exactly why a system should be sized off a test at your tap rather than off a rule of thumb about your city.

Nobody can tell you what your house needs without measuring your water. That is where we start.
